Stockport Council Supports Real Nappy Week
Parents in Stockport are being urged to swap disposable nappies for more environmentally friendly cloth options as part of a special week starting on Monday 21st April.
Stockport Council is supporting Real Nappy Week which has been organised by the Women's Environmental Network (WEN) and the Real Nappy Campaign.
The initiative encourages parents to look at using cheaper and greener options to prevent mountains of nappies from gathering in landfill.
Disposable nappies make up about 3 per cent of the average household rubbish in a year. This amounts to almost 17 million disposable nappies every year in Stockport. These nappies will be sent to landfill where they can take up to 500 years to rot away.
Washable nappies can be used over and over again saving energy resources. They are also easy and cheaper to use coming in a variety of shapes with velcro fastening styles that look very similar to disposables.
Stuart Jackson, Stockport Council's Service Director for Public Protection said: "By using real nappies, parents can avoid sending waste to landfill and help combat climate change. They are also more economical - using washable nappies for one child can save you between £400 and £600. Stockport Council is constantly looking at different ways of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill but it also helps to reduce the amount of waste produced in the first place."
The Stockport Cloth Nappy Network will be holding a 'nappuchino' on Thursday 24th April as part of Real Nappy Week. This is a coffee morning for parents to share their experiences using real nappies and also to find out more information.
The network will be meeting between 10.00am and 12pm at Stockport Central library. Refreshments will be served and there will be a range of nappies on display with plenty of information for those wanting to find out more.
