Work to stabilise Dan Bank Slope, Marple

Published: 11th August 2008 06:50

Stockport Town HallStockport Council will shortly be carrying out work on the A626, Stockport Road, as part of its three year programme to stabilise Dan Bank slope.

Ensuring the long-term safety and stability of the road and the slope is a major project, wholly funded by the Department for Transport. Ground investigation work is an essential part of the project and over the next few weeks the Council will be carrying out work on the A626, which will require the closure of one lane of traffic.

The work has been scheduled during the school holidays, and will be completed overnight, to reduce disruption to local traffic. Temporary traffic lights will operate between 7.00pm and 6.00am on the following dates: Monday 18th to Saturday 23rd August and Tuesday 26th to Wednesday 27th August.

A full ecological and environmental study has also been taking place this year to check the presence and breeding patterns of the wildlife around Dan Bank. This will ensure that that the Council is able to avoid or reduce any impact the work may have on the local environment, including putting measures in place to enhance the natural environment of Dan Bank in the future.

Councillor David White, Executive Member for Transportation, said: "Phase One of the programme is progressing well and whilst investigation work now has to take place on the A626, we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption and inform local people. This is a necessary part of the project and will help to ensure that people continue to have access to the A626 in the long-term."

Phase 2 (2009/10) will involve anchoring the slope and improving drainage to stabilise Dan Bank and help reverse any environmental damage. Phase 3 (2010/11) will involve rebuilding the road, including any improvements required and completing the stabilisation of the slope.
