Greater Manchester local authorities including Stockport Council won an excellence award for their "innovative approach to efficiently managing all agency staffing requirements."
The Agency Staff Project received the award in the Efficiency category from 4ps, local government's partnerships and project delivery specialist, at a national ceremony in London last week.
The project involves the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) plus Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority.
Stockport Council staff from the Procurement and Human Resources team played a significant role in the AGMA Agency Project Board, and Council managers from all Directorates contributed to developing the standards established for best practice.
Councillor Martin Candler, Executive Member for Customer Focus, said: "AGMA recognises that agency staff is a key area where we could all work together to create efficiencies including improved processes and direct savings in one procurement exercise. Stockport Council, along with our partners, worked hard to ensure that the project was a great success. The Council has benefited from the new approach as it has led to better management information about the use of temporary workers, improved quality control of the processes adopted by temporary agencies, and reduced costs."
Chris Wilson, 4ps' Executive Director, added: "The winning local authorities demonstrate successful community partnerships involving the public, private and third sectors. We were very impressed with AGMA's Agency Staff Project which is an example of a highly successful project that has made a real contribution to Greater Manchester."
