Neston Village Fair 2013

Published: 8th July 2013 08:35

A day of unbroken sunshine greeted the thousands of people descending on Comrades' Field in Neston for the 14th Annual Village Fair.

Themed around 'Musicals,' the Fair was officially opened, in fitting style, by new Vicar of the Parish, Rev'd Alan Dawson. Having been introduced by the Mayor of Neston, Cllr Tom Marlow, Alan displayed his sense of humour as he told the crowd that his favourite scene in a Musical was from 'Singing in the Rain,' whereupon the Phantom of the Opera (aka Church Warden Peter Rossiter) showered him with water - twice!

The Rose Queen was crowned by Mrs Karen Dawson. Woodfall Primary School fielded this year's Rose Queen, Amy Leadbetter, and her attendants, Sarah Astbury and Nicholas Swift.  They were ferried to the event in a suitably glamorous classic car, one of many taking part in the cavalcade of vehicles from North West Cheshire Classic Car Club, from the United Reformed Church in Parkgate Road down through the High Street to the Fair.  They were greeted at the gates by the brand new Air Cadets band, playing instruments provided through grant funding from Neston Town Council. The Council had also given the Village Fair Committee a grant to enhance the PA system this year, which greatly improved the sound quality and volume for announcements and performances.

A jam-packed programme of entertainment followed, with superb performances from all.  Featured were the choirs from Neston Primary, Woodfall Primary and St Winefride's RC Primary; Country Dancing from Neston Primary; a variety of performances from the various sections of Little Actors Theatre Company; Hip & Harmony's Adult Community Choir and Streetdancers; Zumba with Jennifer Emery; the NE Singers and an accomplished Gymnastics Display.

A particular shout-out must go to Paula Prytherch of Hip & Harmony CIC and Samantha Giblin from Little Actors, for the amazing job they both do all year round to involve so many people of all ages in contemporary arts projects in the community.

Over the other side of the field a separate stage hosted the Neston's Got Talent Showcase - not a contest this year, but a celebration of the many talented young people in the area.  Neave Diamond, Olivia Mearns, Lauren Mealor, Aaron Bladen, Grace & Maple (Double Trouble), Chelsea Holryod and Seth Beard with his Uncle Tom, all performed brilliantly.  Following them onto the stage were the hilarious Bethania Puppets.

A plethora of stalls, offering information about community organisations; sales of bric-a-brac and refreshments were manned by a colourful bunch, many in fancy dress based on favourite Musicals.

CAN Group provided imaginative and detailed facepainting alongside a bouncy castle for the little ones. They also set up the SNUG equipment - always a popular feature at public events.

Alan Johnson once again held proceedings together with his MC and DJ juggling act, supported by Terry Abel who managed the sound for the second stage.

Raising money for a small school in Sierra Leone, the OAKS charity's volunteers once again organised a balloon release. This year over a thousand were to be seen floating off into the clear blue sky at the end of the Fair.  The one that travels furthest will win a prize for its sponsor.

Best Dressed Stall and Fancy Dress was awarded to the Parish Toy Stall - the Musical they chose was The Wizard of Oz - they were dressed as all the main characters alongside a picture of the Yellow Brick Road.

The Classic Car Winner was a Woolsey 444, reg MDM 773 . The car is a totally original vehicle, 57 years old with just 14,943 miles on the clock.. For the last 15 years it has been owned and lovingly maintained by Mr & Mrs Christiansen.

The event is organised by the Village Fair Committee - a small group of dedicated people who work all year round to ensure everything is ready for this much-loved community event each July.  Peter and Janet Rossiter, Lynne Vaughan, Diane Millington, Keith Moores, Dudley Bidston, Lynn Williams, Pat Fobister and Ron Berg all deserve a huge thank you for the work they put in.

The fair raises money for local good causes and charities. The final total raised will be announced in the coming weeks.

Sponsors this year included Sainsbury's for the donation of vouchers and Lookers Wirral for the BarFly Velcro Wall attraction.  Various local businesses also donated Raffle Prizes, with star prizes sponsored by Shell UK and Andrew's Estates.
