Neston Village Fair 2014

Author: Carrie Spacey Published: 6th July 2014 10:26

Beautiful weather + 2000 people + talented local entertainers = another fabulous Neston Village Fair.

A great day was had by all, as Neston came together once more to celebrate its annual Village Fair.

The afternoon began, as is traditional, with the parade of North West and Chester Classic Cars from the URC, escorting the Rose Queen, Mia Reid and her attendants, Annabel Beddoes and Alex Ford, to Comrades Field, accompanied by the ATC Neston band. Once there, Rev'd Alan Dawson welcomed them and the Mayor of Neston, Cllr Janet Griffiths, who officially opened the Fair.

There was entertainment a-plenty, with Hip & Harmony CIC's Street dancers, Young Singers and Adult Community Choir taking the stage at various points throughout the afternoon.

Neston Primary and Woodfall Primary school choirs sang beautifully, Little Actors and the InterACT Youth Theatre performed excerpts from Les Miserables and Kiss Me Kate, and a good number of people threw themselves into the spirit of the afternoon in an energetic Zumba session co-ordinated by ZumbaJen of Zest Fitness UK.

Over on the Dream Stage, Bethania Puppets were their usual colourful selves.

All afternoon a variety of stalls provided games, things to buy and refreshments to be enjoyed.

Proving particularly popular was Dave Bladen Entertainments' Party Pod - the only one of its kind in the UK.  Offering the chance to dance in front of a large video screen with great sound, lights, 'smoke' and lasers, the kids could not get enough of it!

CAN Group, dressed as Grange Hill schoolkids, provided the bouncy castle, Snug Play equipment and face-painting that so many children always enjoy at the Fair.

In what is starting to look like a trademark, the Reverend got a soaking, but at least this time he was not alone!  The Neston Primary School Rotakids made sure quite a few people got wet, as they pelted them with sponges in the stocks.

Once again the team from OAKs filled up a vast net with balloons, sponsored by hundreds of people, all vying to tie their name to the one that will travel the furthest.

Towards the end of the afternoon, yours truly was presented with a 'Certificate of Adoption' by Rob Halsall representing Neston Female Society - apparently I am now officially considered as 'born in Neston' - a great honour, thank you!

On this TV-themed occasion, prizes were also given to the best stalls and fancy dress - it was a tie for best stall between 'Call the Midwife' and the hilarious mash-up of 'Only Fools and Horses' with 'Batman.'

Now in its 15th year, Neston Village Fair raises funds for a variety of local causes as well as providing a great afternoon for the community to get together and have fun - long may it continue!
