Wirral Hedgehog Rescue

Neston resident Caroline Howe set up Wirral Hedgehog Rescue six years ago and now rescues hogs from all over the area.
She set up Wirral Hedgehog Rescue after finding a hog that had been lost or abandoned by it's mother. Despite her best efforts the hog died, so Caroline decided to find out more about how to care for these funny little creatures.
Having contacted the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, she became a carer for them and, from her own pocket has paid for vet bills, hutches, heat pads, bedding and food. About a year ago Caroline gave up a decent job as she was struggling to combine it with her care of the hogs. She has since become half-owner of a business, which means that despite working full time, she can take the hogs she is caring for to work with her.
Please remember hedgehogs will benefit hugely if you can feed them in dry weather. A bowl of meaty pet food (Caroline recommends chicken flavour cat food), some chopped unsalted nuts, mealworms, sunflower hearts or some special hedgehog food along with a bowl of water can be lifesavers.
If a hedgehog is 'sunbathing', has an obvious wound, is lethargic, staggering or has flies on it there is a serious problem.
In these cases PLEASE get them indoors and warm with food and water then call Caroline at Wirral Hedgehog Rescue on 0151 353 8043 or 07843 434071.
