Question Type 10 Word Connections
In these questions find one word from each group that will complete the sentence in the best way. Mark both words on the answer sheet.
Example
Kid is to
(child goat glove)
as foal is to
(drink horse blanket)
On the answer sheet you are given six words in two groups of three.
A child D drink
B goat E horse
C glove F blanket
Sometimes it is eas to see the answer straight away.
Kid is to goat as foal is to horse.
The first step is to make a link between the first keyword "kid" and the first group of answer options.
Then see if you can make the same link with the second keyword "foal" and the second group of answer options.
Kid is another word for "child" (simile)
Can you make a simile link with foal and drink, horse or blanket?
No
Kid is a young goat (young/adult)
Can you make a young/adult link with foal and drink, horse or blanket?
Yes, foal is a young horse.
The correct answer options are "B" and "E", goat and horse.

A troupe D blood
B sponsor E return
C company F supplier
Question Type 11 Number Series
In each question, find the next number in the sequence and mark it on the answer sheet.
Example 1
4 6 8 10 (?)
It is quite easy to see that the pattern is going up by 2 each time.
So the correct answer is 10 + 2 = 12
Example 2
4 7 7 11 10 15 (?)
The pattern is +3, same, +4, -1, +5 which does not make sense.
Look at alternating numbers
4 7 10 (?)
This is a +3 pattern
So the correct answer is 10 + 3 = 13
Example 3
2 2 4 6 10 (?)
This is "same", +2, +2, +4, which does not make sense and there is not enough information to look for an alternating pattern.
Now look at the pattern again
2 + 2 = 4
2 + 4 = 6
4 + 6 = 10
The sequence continues by adding together the previous two numbers.
So the correct answer is 6 + 10 = 16
This is called a Fibonacci sequence and can be difficult to see if you do not know how to work it out.
All of the above examples would have multiple choice options, but I have left them out so that I can show the standard methods for working them out, which I believe students should be able to do.
Question Variances
There are over 20 variances in this question types, but the methods above work for all of them.
Increase by the same value 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
Increase by a bigger value each time 2, 3, 5, 8, 12
Doubling 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
Multiply by x1, x2, x1, x2 1, 1, 2, 2, 4, 4
Square numbers 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36
Fibonacci 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13
Sample Questions
8 11 14 17 (?)
32 30 27 29 26 28 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting(?)
15 14 15 14 16 15 18 17 (?)
3 4 8 17 33 (?)
Question Type 12 Compound Words
In these questions find one word from each group that makes one correctly spelt word when joined together. The word from the first group always comes first. Mark both answers on the answer sheet.
Example
(path step lollipop)
(girl lady mother)
On the answer sheet you are given six words in two groups of three.
A path D girl
B step E lady
C lollipop F mother
Sometimes it is easy to spot the correct answer, in this case "stepmother".
There are nine possible answer options
1 path girl 4 step girl 7 lollipop girl
2 path lady 5 step lady 8 lollipop lady
3 path mother 6 step mother 9 lollipop mother
You can eliminate 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 because they do not make words.
There are now 2 options to choose from
6 step mother
8 lollipop lady
"stepmother" is one word, but lollipop lady is 2 words.
So the correct answer option is B, E, step mother
Sample Questions
(tip tin tab)
(toe too try)
(son sin sun)
(beam boom brim)
(wait writ west)
(ton tin ten)
(please purse page)
(ant spire buoy)
Next week there will be two articles, one covering question types 13 and 14 and a separate article for question type 15. Question type 15 is a different format to all other question types and needs to be considered seperately to the others, this will become apparent when you read the article.
