Neston's Royal British Legion Club Needs You!

Published: 18th December 2013 09:14

The Club needs your support - use it or lose it!

Neston Royal British LegionA letter has been handed out to all rejoining members warning that the Club facilities are not being used and as consequence the club is facing closure. Although the committee has been forced to make several previous cutbacks it is still confident that with renewed support of members the future could be secured.

Club President, Terry Abel, said: "Recently the committee made the decision to totally refurbish the upstairs ballroom to encourage more use of this facility.

"The local Branch/club was once the hub of the Neston community and it would be very sad to witness it's closure and never to re-open."

Mayor of Neston, Cllr Tom Marlow said: "As a member of Neston Royal British Legion Club I was concerned to hear of the disturbing news of the pending future of the Club in our town of Neston.

"It has always been a crucial part of our community, providing a suitable environment for ex-service men and women to meet and socialise, and to raise funds for the benefit of those ex-service personnel and their families.

"The club, like many Legion clubs throughout the land, is facing increasing financial difficulties and it is up to us as members to ensure our club remains open for the present and future ex-servicemen and women.

"If you are not a member already, then you too can help by becoming one. It costs just £18 per year.

"I, for one, would be deeply saddened to see our Legion close."

I have just tried to book the hall for a birthday party , but been told that they do not do Saturday nights for private parties! What a waste of resourses leaving a function room empty on a Saturday and turning away business.THe BL need to consider needs of the consumer if they are to survive... Can't believe this policy!

Hi Suzy - I may be wrong, but I think they do use the function room on Saturday nights as they usually have live entertainment, bingo etc. I will bring this to their attention though, to see if someone from the club could clarify.

I now have a reply from Terry at the British Legion:

"The Neston Legion Club has always set aside Saturday night for members' social night and would wish to continue.
Live artists are booked three months in advance and to cancel artists for a private booking may cost the club a cancellation fee and may upset the Saturday nighters if their social nights were to become irrregular due to private bookings.
May I apologise to the person who tried to book a Saturday night for a private party and was turned down, but hope they understand why. May I suggest a Friday night or a Sunday night; both nights are free of permanent bookings. "

I hear what you are saying (Terry) but as I am aware there are two rooms that can be used for functions/parties etc...I am suprised that you have stated that the Legion my need to close down if you are able to fill the large function room( capacity175) every Saturday night , then i am sure this must or should be profitable. Friday nights are not great for a party with people working and having to travel nor Sunday nights due to work the next day. Most function rooms are available for Saturday night parties and perhaps your reluctance to consider this maybe to the detriment of the club, Could not the smaller room not be used on the nights you have a party booked for the social night?Parties will bring in recommendation not to say extra money to the fund and so the business will boom and perhaps the threat of closure will disappear?

That said there should be no cancellation fee for the artist as the party i was hoping to have is over 3 months away
