Parkgate Society Community Spirit in Action - Round 2!

Author: David Johnson Published: 17th April 2015 11:55

The Parkgate Society Community Spirit volunteers assembled once again last Saturday to complete another litter pick around the village.

Although the weather was rather wet early on, by 9.30am the sun had come out and the volunteers met outside the Red Lion to sign in and collect their litter grabbers kindly loaned by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

Over the following two hours the volunteers, including Colin Wells from RSPB, covered the main areas of Parkgate. The eleven volunteers split into two groups and whilst one group collected litter and debris along the Marsh from the Boathouse to the Old Quay and beyond towards Moorside Lane, the other group picked litter along Brooklands Road up towards Wood Lane. This group then moved along the length of Wood Lane and back down to the Wirral Way and along towards Boathouse Lane.

Parkgate Society Community Spirit in Action - litter pickJust some of the debris collected from the marsh during last week's litter pick.

In two hours 16 bags were filled with rubbish and again from the Marsh yet another car wheel with tyre and scraps of metal were collected. Builders' rubble and garden waste was also removed from the marsh. Sadly this appears to be increasing problem and needs to be addressed by our local Town Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council. Following the elections we will be discussing this with our new councillors. Having now completed three organised and several ad hoc litter picks the volunteers have filled a total of sixty four green bags of rubbish which have been taken away by CWaC staff. This number of bags is in addition to the litter cleared by CWaC staff who do a tremendous job in the community.

Walking around Parkgate and along the marsh clearing litter and rubbish does highlight the total disrespect for our local environment by a small number of people.

Why do people throw their rubbish out of cars? The number of empty wine and spirit bottles and used take away meal collected from the grass verges up and down Boathouse Lane is staggering. There are litter bins along the Parade yet people throw litter, bottles and beer glasses over the seawall onto the Marsh. Why?
