Significant Parkgate Buildings to Display Decorative Plaques

Author: David Johnson Published: 20th November 2015 10:59

David Johnson writes to AboutMyArea Neston with news from Parkgate Society.

Earlier this year the Parkgate Society published a Parkgate Heritage Trail booklet. The trail describes a number of important areas and properties stretching from the Wirral Way Car Park on Station Road, continuing along the Parade to the Old Baths Car Park. The owners of a number of the properties described in the booklet were approached to see if they would be prepared to allow a descriptive plaque to be installed on their property.

Several agreed to this initiative and, thanks to the support of Cheshire West and Chester Council, the plaques have now been produced. On Wednesday 11th November, prior to the Society's monthly committee meeting, a reception was held at St Thomas' Church for the proud householders to view the 7 plaques that are to be installed on their properties. It is hoped that the plaques will be installed by Cheshire West contractors in the New Year.

In other news, on Monday 16th November the Parkgate Society held an inaugural hot pot supper prior to their monthly meeting and talk. The idea of holding this event was to give members an opportunity to get to know one another in convivial surroundings. The meal, prepared and served by Laura Payne and her staff of Mozkitos, was held at Neston Cricket club.

Based on the comments made afterwards it is hoped to become a regular feature in the Society program of events each year. The meal was followed by an interesting talk by Gavin Hunter on the History of Thornton Hough Village. In addition to the members who enjoyed the meal a number of other members arrived for the talk which swelled the attendance to nearly 80 people, making this a record event for the Parkgate Society.

Today we tried out the new Parkgate Heritage Trail booklet, and found out quite a bit about Parkgate that we didn't know. There are interesting buildings hidden away. It's £2 from Mozitos and Nicholls. Congratulations to Alan Passmore for excellent text and pictures!
