Parkgate Clean Up Day Supported by Council Staff

Published: 22nd September 2016 14:25

The recent annual Big Dee Day event to help clean up the River Dee, surrounding areas and waterways has been reported to be a big success, with hundreds of volunteers getting involved.

Large groups of people in several locations were inspired to come together to make a difference in their communities for Big Dee Day.

In Parkgate over 25 staff from the Council's Economic Growth Team turned out to support the Parkgate Society Community Spirit volunteers and local ward councillors Martin Barker (Parkgate) and Louise Gittins (Little Neston and Burton). Between them they filled around a dozen bags of litter and rubbish collected from the edge of the marsh along the seawall starting from the golf course right along to the south slipway. In addition the partnership painted picnic benches, cut back shrubs and trees and replaced rotten tree stumps to prevent parking on greenspaces.

Love Your Streets - the Council's volunteering initiative - enables staff to access up to two days volunteering leave to support the Council's vision to create thriving communities.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Karen Shore said: "The beautiful River Dee and nearby canal waterways are some of our area's most scenic attractions. It's fantastic this Big Dee Day clean up event takes place each year to keep them looking their best.

"I'm delighted that the Council was able to support this local initiative that is so important to the local communities along the River Dee. Everyone involved did a fantastic job."

After the clean-up, volunteers' efforts were rewarded with coffee, tea and cakes at nearby Elephant Lounge and Bar.  Owner Emma Mitchell said: "It was a great effort by the council's staff and it was a pleasure to serve up refreshments for them afterwards."
