Civil rights leader, the Reverend Jesse Jackson will deliver a lecture at the University of Liverpool on the struggle for civil rights and the historic election of Barack Obama as US president.
Reverend Jackson, Founder and President of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and former US presidential candidate, is one of America's foremost civil rights, religious and political figures and has played a significant role in economic and social justice movements over the past 40 years.
Rainbow/PUSH is a non-profit organisation formed as a merger between Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) and the National Rainbow Coalition. The merged entity campaigns for social change to empower black workers, women and children throughout the United States.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Howard Newby, said: "Reverend Jackson continues to be at the forefront of the American civil rights movement and has experienced first hand some of the most significant events in US history including the assassination of Martin Luther King and this year's presidential success of Barrack Obama. We are delighted to welcome him to the University at such an important time in US and world politics."
The Struggle Goes on: The fight for civil rights both past and present will take place at the University's Guild of Students on Tuesday, 2 December at 2.30pm.
