Neston's War Memorial's Been Framed!

Author: Lucy Brooks Published: 3rd November 2015 09:15

Lucy Brooks, local accountant and volunteer flower arranger for Neston Parish Church, writes to tell AboutMyArea readers about the beautiful poppy 'frame' that has been installed around the Cenotaph in the town centre.

The frame complements the knitted poppies that now adorn the railings around the memorial.

Eight of Neston Parish Church's flower arrangers met at the weekend in the church to create the twelve pieces of the frame for the bottom step of the war memorial.

This is the largest single floral installation that I've co-ordinated. The perimeter of the bottom step of the memorial is over 34 feet. The twelve pieces of the frame weigh around 1 stone each so it's also the heaviest arrangement (consisting of 34 blocks of wet oasis). The foliage is real and 100 Royal British Legion poppies have been added. The plan is to leave the frame in place until the beginning of January.

The idea for the frame came to me whilst driving down the High Street. The area around the memorial had recently been paved and I thought a frame around the bottom step would draw further attention to the memorial before, during and after Remembrance Day.

1st Ness Guides and Brownies have been collecting and creating knitted poppies, which are now being attached to the railings around the Memorial, as you can see clearly in this additional photo from Bernard Rose:

Meanwhile, across the road at Andrew's Estates, the window has been decked out with suitable images for Remembrance week:
