How Can We Live a Low Carbon Life in CH64?

Author: Peter Burke Published: 15th September 2017 09:02

Eco, Carbon, Greenhouse, Ozone, recycling, waste reduction, renewables.... the list of words associated with the environment is endless these days and frankly, it's a minefield.

A Fairer Society is a community-led housing developer and, since project founder Peter Burke moved to the local area 9 months ago, he's seen a real opportunity to support projects here in the CH64 postcode area to adopt a low carbon community.   Peter tells us more in this article...

The idea around a community-led approach means integrating all the aspects of how we live and making them better for the environment. After an introduction to Martin Barker, councillor for Parkgate, conversations have led to some opportunties within the locality and how a greener, more sustainable, strategy can become the solutions for the CH64 area.

Some things that have been identified are:

  • Fruit and vegetable growing projects, so CH64 can benefit more from locally grown and sourced organic food; something that the plethora of good eating establishments and schools could benefit from, and there is plenty of green land.
  • A bus link to Hooton Station and the local hospitals during non peak times, making it an Eco Bus so it's run on green energy.
  • Linking in with local businesses, creating and providing cheaper energy from solar, wind or biomass heat and power.

The lists are always endless, but starting somewhere is the plan and that's where the discussions led.

Following further talks with Peter Bulmer, a community energy officer at Cheshire West and Chester Council in the low carbon team, and a few other local residents who are passionate about, and see the benefits of, the changes that can be made, the CH64 Low Carbon Living initiative has been created. Right now we are at Step 1 - exploring the possibilities and letting people, community projects and businesses make this a reality. It has to be led by the people who live here.

One thing of great importance is the link-up between the community groups that exist and are already working on similar projects, or that have aspirations to, as well as schools and, importantly, the commercial sector. The link with both Primary and High schools is to be the lead and we invite young people and children to be the influencers, it's their future.

Join our Facebook group where we will post more exciting ideas of what's possible. You can start to post your own ideas, or concerns, then come and visit us face to face - we will be setting up an open day event once we know we have enough interest. Request to join our facebook group here.

We've got a small active group of CH64 residents so far. The next step is to build our community and start to understand how we can work together to achieve what you want.

If you aren't on Facebook please text your name and email address to 07542 072857 so you can be kept informed that way. If you don't have access to the internet or email, then leave a phone number as your primary contact details and we will be in touch.

Coming up on AboutMyArea...

A series of case studies looking at other areas in the country that have adopted low carbon living ideas.  Over the next few weeks we will be publishing one at a time to give you a chance to think about some of the suggestions and help form the basis for further discussion at future meetings.
