8-11 Nov 2017 - Neston Players present 'King and Country'

Published: 9th October 2017 09:40

It's not just another war play...

Neston Players present King and CountryDan Short plays Private Hamp

This November, Neston Players will take to the stage in 'King and Country.' It is based on a play by John Wilson, called 'Hamp.'

Martin Riley who was nominated by NODA North West, the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, for best supporting actor in the Players' "Henry V", directs a tremendous cast of experienced actors in the amateur dramatic world.

'King and Country' tells the story of Private Hamp, a simple Lancashire man who has endured four years of the carnage of war. One day he walks away from battle, technically deserting his country and his duty, yet with no more purpose than to put some space between himself and a situation of unspeakable horror.

He has no scheme, no tricks, and no excuses. To Hamp's surprise the army takes notice and he is court-martialled for desertion. Set in a time when shell-shock was not recognised, 'King and Country' will resonate with today's audience, familiar with the effects of war and post traumatic stress disorder. It is this contemporary parallel that gives the powerful and tragic play its continuing meaning and, with the inclusion of a classic courtroom drama, the audience will be deeply moved.

Martin said: "'King and Country'' is not just another war play as it does not seek to glorify war or the exploits of brave men. Instead it examines the consequences of war upon individuals and the obligation and cost of doing one's duty.

"'King and Country' portrays how ordinary men cope with extraordinary circumstances."

Neston Players' production will be performed at Neston Civic Hall from Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th November. Doors open 7.00pm, performances begin at 7.30pm.
