Parking in Parkgate

Author: Margaret Page Published: 19th April 2012 08:40

A letter from a resident.

What is the point of Double Yellow Lines on the Prom? Nobody takes any notice of them!

yellow linesNobody does anything about the cars parked illegally. It's an accident waiting to happen - on many occasions it would be impossible to get an emergency vehicule along there.

How are we going to cater for visitors if the proposed walkways out onto the marshes materialise - we can't cope now with the total lack of sensible parking space.

There are already car parks at either end of the Parade (2x Wirral Way and Park Field. 'Where to park' publicity, proper signing and waymarked pedestrian (including wheelchair friendly) routes to the 'honeypot' areas could alleviate the pressure. That's apart from proper enforcement of course, especially at weekends and evenings when the main problem emerges. Ms Page doesn't mention the additional no loading restrictions intended to prevent obstruction at the middle pinch point but they get ignored too. It's also not helped by the Mostyn House chicane. We want to encourage visitors who bring jobs to the village and the facilities that create a pleasant 'buzz'.

PS I'd like to complement the Council Streetscene workers for keeping on top of the litter caused by inadequate disposal facilities.

Parking in Parkgate needs addressing now. I travel along the parade regularly (collecting and dropping off a relative). I have lost count of the number of people who glare at me (from their illegally parked cars while just enjoying an ice cream) as I try and squeeze past them. I have asked for PCSO's to police the parade in an effort to keep access clear, however they usually turn up at an inappropriate time (9.00 am) or when the weather is awful and the parade is empty. I JUST HOPE IT DOESN'T TAKE AN ACCIDENT, POSSIBLY A DEAD OR INJURED CHILD, FOR OFFICIALS TO TAKE ACTION.

About three years ago I witnessed the best bit of local policing ever.
There were cars parked all along the parade with a tall helmeted PC walking up and down when someone asked him why he was not ticketing the erring motorists?
His reply was - "Here we have people enjoying the scenery, having fun and Nicholl's icecream. Now, wouldn't it be churlish of me to spoil all that? Mind you ,he said pointing towards Coastguard House, anyone who causes an obstruction there will definitely get a ticket!"
So there we have it until more parking is provided - the foot patrolling policeman or PCSO acting with commonsense so that everyone safely benefits including Parkgate's hotels, restaurants and shops.

I have spoken to the council to request further parking assistance by means of triple red lines as i agree the road os far too congested with irresponsible motorists.
Please bring back police enforcement instead of non existant cctv vehicles before someone is hurt!
Any councillors please contact the local highways and pass on the views of your residents......ty

So Colin, are you saying we should actively discourage visitors who bring the much-needed tourism pound to the area? I prefer the common sense approach mentioned above.

Members of the S106 committee, which consists of CWaC councillors,Town councillors, chamber of trade and others have recently submitted an application for funding for a number of projects including improvements to the wirral way car park (by the entrance to the cricket club) and although its only in its very early stages we do recognise the problems in Parkgate so if we can encourage tourism but try to alleviate parking problems everyone could be a winner.I will update any progress via this site

It seems that we all agree that Parkgate Parade arrangements are a complete mess with road marking that few take any notice of and those horrible speed humps when a chicane system similar to Eastham Ferry plus 'speed clocks' and/or 20 mph limit would be better especially as one part of the chicane already exists at Coastguard Cottage.Further road narrowing restraints could be constructed at the Boathouse Lane end and Mostyn House end although the scaffolding is now serving that purpose..Alternatively,speed sensitive traffic lights either side of Coastguard Cottage may be all that is required.
As they are being ignored, the road marking requires a rethink as to how much is really necessary if a different approach is taken to the problem.
It is pleasing to know that Cllr.Andy is on to the problem as he generally gets things done.

When its busy in Parkgate the traffic slows the speeding drives down to an acceptable level. The visitors do what £50,000 worth of useless traffic calming failed to do the rest of the time. Well done to our council (where does our rates money go?) . Oh and how long is the scaffolding going to be up on Mostyn House? ask the council
