Standard supermarket strawberries taste just as good as
organic and premium varieties, says consumer champion
which.co.uk as it serves up the results of a test to find
Wimbledon's perfect match*.
After tasting organic, standard and premium strawberries from
six of the biggest supermarkets - Asda, Marks &Spencer,
Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose - testers found no
overall difference in taste or appearance between the
varieties.
which.co.uk found there was a difference in price though.
Organic strawberries cost twice as much as standard varieties,
while the premium punnets cost almost three times as much.
There were some variations between the stores too. Bucking
the trend, nine out of ten tasters preferred Asda organic
strawberries to its standard range. But at Marks &Spencer,
tasters preferred non-organic M&S Juicy British Strawberries
over the store's organic punnets.
Jess Ross, Editor, which.co.uk says:
"It's that exciting time of year when all eyes are on centre
court and everyone's serving strawberries. In our taste tests
we were surprised to find out that there wasn't any difference
in taste or appearance between the organic, premium and
standard varieties - apart from the price. Advantage: standard
strawberries!"
