Drivers advised to take care on the roads as snow showers expected in Midlands

The Highways Agency advised drivers to take extra care on the roads as the Met Office said that snow showers could affect the Midlands during the day.
The Met Office says that snow mainly over South West England this morning will spread northwards and eastwards to affect much of the country, apart from East and South East England today and overnight. Some places may see 2 to 5 centimetres of fresh snow. This evening and overnight trans-Pennine routes may experience deeper snow.
The Agency is continuing to spread salt on motorways and all purpose trunk roads affected by the winter weather.
The Agency advised drivers in the Midlands to check weather forecasts and road conditions. If you must travel, you should carry warm clothing and an emergency pack in your car. Plan your journey before leaving home. Check your route for delays, and the weather forecast. Listen to travel news on your car radio and for long journeys take food and water, boots, de-icer, a torch and spade in your vehicle.
Take care around gritters and vehicles clearing snow and only overtake if you can do so safely, without driving on any uncleared snow. These vehicles are continuing to perform essential work to keep roads open. It can take ten times longer to stop when it is icy, so allow more room to slow down and stop. Avoid losing control of your vehicle because of wheel spin, by using the highest gear possible. Avoid sudden braking, acceleration and sharp turns.
Information about current road conditions is on the Highways Agency's website http://www.highways.gov.uk/trafficinfo/
