STAFFORDSHIRE POLICE'S CHRIS BLANKSBY GETS ON HIS BIKE TO FIGHT HEART DISEASE
Chris Blanksby is one of Burton-Upon-Trent's Neighbourhood Police Community Support Officer's currently employed by Staffordshire Police; He is 21 years old and live's in Hilton, Derbyshire. He has lived in Hilton since birth moving up from Hilton Primary School onto John Port then to Burton College and finally Staffordshire University.
Chris has been involved in Hilton Harriers Football Club as a player and has since gone on to complete his coaching badges and now run's his own children's football club in Winshill"
"After he spent most of his childhood in and out of London's Great Ormond St Hospital he can safely say he has seen the first hand effects that heart disease has on family and friends. Although he did not suffer from the disease itself It became aware to Chris that there were children a lot less fortunate than himself, so he feels it's his chance to give something back and help those who need it most."
Chris is joining the second Big Heart Bike Ride- a unique cycling challenge to raise funds to help fight heart and circulatory disease through the work of four UK heart charities. Men and Women of all ages who are prepared to raise sponsorship, train and get fit are invited to take part.
Funds raised by the tough 400km ride through Kenya's spectacular Rift Valley will be divided equally between the British Heart Foundation, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the young), Echo UK (The Tiny Tickers Charity) and H.E.A.R.T UK. The charities work ranges from detecting heart problems in babies before they are born and supporting families coping with cardiac disease in young people through the funding preventative work, providing specialist facilities and equipment and fund live-saving research into the causes and treatment of heart disease.
The Big Heart Ride in Kenya takes place from 11- 20 October 2008 and promises to be the experience of a lifetime! An amazing five-day cycling adventure cycling from slopes of Mount Kenya to the shores of Lake Victoria. The route will include challenging on and off- road cycling covering between 80and 90kms a day and taking participants across the equator. Through this Chris will experience Africa away from the usual tourist trails and cycle through savannah plains, game parks, tropical rainforests and traditional villages along the way.
This is a challenging ride and Chris has already been training hard to ensure he is fit enough to complete the cycle ride and to raise a minimum of £3,000 in sponsorship for the charities.
