Green Lawn - Red Alert!
| Published: 27th August 2007 23:04 |
Our record breaking wet summer has brought a red threat to lawns in Leicestershire and Derbyshire!
A dry April followed by a soaking Summer has caused a fungal disease known as Red Thread to attack millions of well-kept lawns all over the country, and the Castle Donington area is no exception.
The disease causes unsightly brown or white patches to appear, and eventually red or pink "needles" appear, and the weather conditions this Summer have created ideal conditions for this particular fungus to thrive.
The continued wet weather has resulted in a much stronger strain of redthread that creates damaged patches on the lawn, as the fungus "swallows" all the nutrients in the grass, and if closely inspected you can see a fine red "needle" on the grass blade, or even tiny areas of pink "fluff" like miniature cotton wool.
As many as 4 or 5 out of every ten lawns are affected in some areas.
Redthread can often be treated by applying fertiliser , and if necessary fungicide to the lawn, and can be helped by good mowing practice.
