NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!

So, it’s January 2007. You’re down to the Toffee Pennies in the Quality Street tin, the last fig in the tray, the one chocolate bar in your children’s selection box that no-one else will eat.
There are no more excuses; you simply have to take responsibility for your actions. You made the New Year’s resolution to lose weight, join a gym, start walking the children to school and now there’s no reason why you shouldn’t.
Or is there?
They say the hardest part of joining a gym is walking through the door on the first day, but if you don’t even know where your local gym is and what it has to offer you and your personal circumstances (crèche, disabled facilities, late night opening) then it starts to become more clear why recent survey results show such disappointing statistics.
The figures show that whilst we make New Year’s resolutions year on year, we actually don’t have any intention of keeping them or soon find good reason to stop.
Local community website AboutMyArea/DE74 is sweating away to support people wanting to lose weight and get fit, by providing local information on the best places to kick off those bad habits adopted over Christmas. The definitive list of where to go and what to do to burn off excess pounds and find that long lost six pack.
So when you’ve found your favourite Lycra number from the depths of your wardrobe, read on to see some of AboutMyArea/DE74’s favourite health and fitness classes and then go and try one for yourself:
- Salsa – Not the Mexican spicy sauce variety, but the hot Latin body grinding dance, often found in your local bar/restaurant. Fantastic way to get fit, socialise and a great excuse to flirt with the opposite sex. - Pole Dancing – Not for the faint-hearted! But definitely for someone who wants to try something a bit different with a real confidence boost thrown in, no doubt!
- Spinning – AboutMyArea really liked the sound of this (pictured people spinning round and round in circles until they were so dizzy, they fell over). Nothing like that we’re afraid! It’s cycling on the spot, not going very far, but working up a great sweat to funky music. Don’t plan doing too much the next day though!
- Belly Dancing – One of the latest crazes to hit the UK and although the name suggests otherwise, it’s a great exercise for the hips! A very sensual, exotic way to get fit – we’re all for it!
- Tai Chi – Softly, softly catchy monkey! This martial arts inspired form of exercise is graceful, smooth and slow. A far cry from the pumping, jumping, skipping classes that put fear into those that attempt them and not a grapevine in sight!
- Boxercise – A great way to get rid of all the stresses and strains of the day by pummelling the air with your fists in time to music. You could even pretend there’s someone in front of you (horrible boss, nasty neighbour, mother-in-law), you get the picture!!
