Melbourne Festival 2008 Invites Creative Writers

Plans are now well underway for this year's Melbourne Festival. Local residents have agreed to open their homes again this year and approximately 80 artists have been selected to exhibit on this years Art and Architecture Trail.
As 2008 is the National Year of Reading Melbourne Festival is going to have a literary thread running through it this year.
The programme of events leading up to the Festival will include a Comedy Night, an Evening of Wine and Words on the theme "You are what you read!", a poetry evening - featuring local poets and a talk by Roy Hattersley about his new book Borrowed Time - The story of Britain between the wars.
Local writers are invited to participate in a Melbourne Festival Creative Writing Competition - sponsored by the Village Voice.
In addition during the Art and Architecture Trail weekend Authors including Andy Cope and Gregory Heath will be speaking at Melbourne Library. The Little Goldfish, a children's book written by Victoria Yates and Illustrated by Victoria Brown will be launched and local illustrators, bookmakers and printmakers will be highlighted on the Trail.
Poetry at Melbourne Festival
Calling Melbourne's poets! As part of the Arts Festival we are planning to hold another Poetry Evening in the elegant surroundings of The Grange, and this year we would like to encourage the budding poets of Melbourne to come and read their own works. Love poetry, comic poetry, poetry of sorrow, joy and adventures....all welcome!

John Blunt has already agreed to come and read some of his - well known for his interest in the environment and local history, you may not have realized that the poem you read on the stiles as you head on his permissive path towards Staunton Harold, was in fact by John.
Melbourne Festival Creative Writing Competition
New to Melbourne Festival in 2008 is a Creative Writing Competition, open to adults and teenagers, organised by the Melbourne Festival team in association with the Village Voice. Entries should be 10 to 250 words of prose or poetry on the theme "Life and Art". The closing date for entries is August 24th 2008.
Judging will be conducted by a panel and the winner will be announced at 2pm on Saturday 13th September at Melbourne Library. The winning entry will be published in the October edition of Village Voice.
All entries will be available to view in the Library at the Bill Shone Leisure Centre, High Street, Melbourne, DE73 8GJ, during the Festival Art and Architecture Trail weekend - 13th & 14th September.
