Warning After Card Reading Device Found on ATM

Officers in North West Leicestershire have issued a warning to residents living in and around Castle Donington after a card reading device was found attached to an ATM in Market Street, Ashby.

An engineer found the device, in late October, attached to the cash machine after it had began blocking customer's cards.

Staff at the bank then reported the incident to the police.

PC Jon Martin, from North West Leicestershire local policing unit, said:

"We are hoping that this release will make more people aware when using their cards.

"We have not received any reports so far from any victims but would like to encourage anyone who thinks they have been a victim to contact us and their bank.

 "We would also like to encourage people to carefully read through their bank statements and inform their banks immediately if they see any transaction that does not appear familiar. Although cancelling your bank card can seem like an inconvenience, in most cases it is the best way to prevent getting your money stolen when your card has been taken.

"When using cash machines it is always a good idea to cover the keypad when you are entering your pin number. This will prevent fraudsters from obtaining your details and subsequently stealing your money.

 "Since receiving the report we have sent the device to be assessed and are currently in the process of checking CCTV in the area."
