Published: 17th April 2008 13:55

Castle Donington FC
Visit by Twinning Town Football Team
US Gasny

Twinning Football TournamentFrench team (yellow) vs Donington teamThe annual visit by Castle Donington twinning town football team US Gasny to Castle Donington FC took place on Sunday 13th April.

As in previous years the visitors arrived on Thursday night to a reception at the Sailors and Soldiers Club where they met their hosts who were to accommodate them for the weekend.

On the Friday they travelled to Drayton Manor Park for a days entertainment followed in the evening by a Race Night at the Sailors and Soldiers Club.

The Saturday started with a trip to see the Notts County versus Accrington Stanley Division two fixture, followed in the evening by a Disco at the Village Hall Moira Dale.

Twinning Football TournamentDonington County - Trophy winners U13/14The main event of the weekend was a six aside tournament held at Spital Park on the Sunday with four leagues to accommodate the age groups brought over by the French club. The tournament was a little smaller in size this year due to the fact that the facilities usually used were not available due to the new build of the Community Facilities on the site of the old changing rooms.

Three marquees were erected so hot drinks and food could be served and administration of the event could take place.

The Donington teams were very successful this year winning every age group, they were :-

  • U7 - U9 age group, Donington Milan.
  • U10 - U11 age group, Donington Villa.
  • U12 age group, Donington New shirts
  • U13 - U14 age group, Donington County.

Each player taking part in the tournament received a trophy, which were kindly donated this year by Castle Donington Twinning Society.

Twinning French TournamentDonington Veterans TeamAfter the tournament had finished the older members of the visiting party and Castle Donington played a friendly veterans match which finished with an honourable 3-3 draw.

The day was then finished off by a buffet reception for the visitors and their hosts at the Village Hall, Moira Dale. The exhausted party then left for thr return trip to Gasny early on the Monday morning.

Castle Donington FC chairman Rick Henshall commented:

"What a successful weekend this has been, we thought that restrictions due to the temporary lack of facilities would inhibit the tournament on the Sunday, but as always everybody got stuck in with lots of hard work to make the day a success."

"It is great to see the youngsters develop friendships with their French counterparts, and we look forward to our return visit to France in May."
