GIOVANARDI AIMS TO TIGHTEN HIS GRIP ON CROWN
HiQ MSA BRITISH TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND THREE - DONINGTON PARK - SATURDAY-SUNDAY 3-4 MAY
Championship leader Fabrizio GiovanardiFabrizio Giovanardi, the reigning British Touring Car Champion, is confident that he can build on his opening round points haul, tightening his grip on his crown, as he heads for Donington Park and the third round of this season's HiQ backed series over the weekend of Saturday-Sunday 3-4 May.
The Team VXR driver powered his Vauxhall Vectra to a winning double in the opening ‘shoot-out' at Brands Hatch and that was just enough to give him the edge, by a couple of points, over the rising star of the championship Mat Jackson, who having claimed pole start, looked good for a first race victory.
The BMW driver had to settle for second best as Giovanardi pounced to begin his title defence with a victory, but was again well on the pace, finishing second to rival BMW driver Colin Turkington in the afternoon's third race in which the Vauxhall driver had to settle for sixth place.
That puts the early season pressure onto Seat driver Jason Plato who had a best result of third in the opening race, and now finds himself playing catch-up and in need of an action replay of his winning double of last season at Donington.
Plato is a strong, determined driver and will be keen to fight back at the parkland circuit, but it was Giovanardi who fired the warning shots to the pretenders to his crown:
"I flew home to Italy with a big smile on my face, but I know it is going to be very tough to maintain this form. We are competitive, but the others are very close behind. The grid this year is so strong, so it was very important to get a good start to the season."
