Castle Donington Town FC vs Willington FC (Cup) & Matlock Sports (League)

Published: 6th April 2008 20:47

Castle Donington Town FC had a mixed week in both Cup and League in competitions. In Midweek they were knocked out of the Challenge Cup at the semi-final point by league leaders Willington FC but at the weekend they got a valuable point away from home against second placed Matlock Sports.

After losing to Willington already three times this season, Donington looked forward to their semi-final battle with Willington hoping for a cup upset. Willington started the game strongly and soon went ahead after The Dons failed to defend from the set piece as Willington scrambled the ball in. After going close on several occaions Donington managed to draw level when Karl Munton decieving shot fooled the keeper and Town went level. Willington soon regained their lead, heading home from a corner. Town went in to the break still very much in the game but the Division 1 leaders got an early goal in the second period of half time effectivly killing off Town. Man of the match went to James King. Manager Steve King said "This was our best performance out of the four times we have played them, but we still failed to defend set peices and this is something we will work on. I'm proud of the players performance and attitude. I would also like to thank all the people who came to watch!'

Donington got a better result at the weekend and put their cup woe behind them by drawing 1-1 to Matlock Sports, who like Town are chasing promotion. With several key players out Town put out a mix match side but all players worked hard and Town was unlucky not to get all 3 points! Sports went ahead only for Munton to steal a point in the last minute. Donington now have key fixtures and all games are must wins if they stand any chance of going up!

Donington are looking to move up the table this week with two away fixtures first on wednesday night town travel to Heanor Colliers and on saturday they face Holbrook St Michaels Reserves.
