Castle Donington Town FC have made a return to The Belfields Midlands Regional Alliance Premier Division after gaining promotion in a 2-1 away victory to Swanwick Pentrich Road.
Doningtons chances of promotion looked dead and buried in mid season as they slumped to three straight home defeats, but in early april Town had a life line when they snatched an away point to Matlock Sports which still meant mathmatically Town still had a chance of going up if they won their last six games.
After five out of six wins it came down to Saturdays clash against Swanwick, if Donington won they would gain promotion via goal difference.
With Castle Donington taking an excellent away crowd it seemed more of a home tie for the Premier chasers. Both teams started nervously and Donington needed an early goal to settle any kind of an upset. A Karl Munton corner broke the dead lock on 23 minutes when Richard Fordham leaped at the back post to nod home.Things then got even better for Town when Tom Tribe was fouled in the area, as the away team awarded a penalty. Donington had missed their previous two penalties so with a change of taker Jack Purkis cooley steped up and netted his 22nd goal of the season. The Dons went into the break two goals to the good and looking much the better side.
The second half started very poorly from both sides. Karl Munton forced an excellent save from the Swanwick keeper and super sub Ryan Leavesley was unlucky not to put Donington three up. However this set up a very nervous finish for town when the home side scored on 78 minutes from a corner.
Donington held on and were finally promoted to the Premier after scraping on goal difference with plus five.
Castle Donington Chairman Gary Driscol said "This is my first season as Chairman and I couldn't have asked for anymore. thought the lads were superb today and throughout all the season!"
Assistant Manager Harry Deary added "This has been a long hard season for us, but we got what we set out to do. The lads have now got a well deserved break and we will look forward to next season. I would also like to thank all the away support they were magnificent"
Castle Donington Town FC will be holding the annual end of season presentation on Friday June the 13th at the Donington Manor. Anyone who wishes to attend please contact Gary Driscol or Sue Sherman for tickets.
