New and Old - But Still High-Speed Bank Holiday Thrills - Donington Park 3/4/5 May

Published: 30th April 2008 14:23

Donington Park

HiQ MSA British Touring Cars - Saturday/Sunday 3/4 May
Masters Top Hat Historic Car races - Monday 5 May

The latest high-tech saloons provide the sporting thrills in the John Guest Trophy Raceday - the third round of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship - at Donington Park this coming Saturday and Sunday but then it is the turn of the cars of a bygone era to take to the Leicestershire circuit on Holiday Monday.

Fabrizio Giovanardi, the reigning champion, heads the pack as they line up for the three races counting to the British Touring car series and the Italian is intent on a return to winning ways to move even further ahead of the pretenders to his title.

The VXR Vauxhall Vectra driver took a winning double in the opening round, but had to be content with packing the placings and racking up the points to extend his advantage in the early season title stakes last time out.

"I got a podium place which I'm happy about but at Donington Park we will be pushing for victory again," said Giovanardi who had seen his team-mate Matt Neal take a first success of the season in the second.

"I'm absolutely overwhelmed, I'm really happy to win my first race for VX Racing. It was a great weekend for us and I also got another podium position with my third place in race one," said former two times champion Neal.

Gordon Shedden and Mat Jackson were the other winners in the second round - Flying Scot Shedden opened his seasonal account at the wheel of the  Team Halfords Honda Civic and then added a pair of fourth places for good measure, but, the father and son duo of Mike and Andrew Jordan in their John Guest backed Honda Integras are sure to be gunning for glory on their local circuit.

Around the touring car races there are family fun activities, including a freestyle, highly spectacular, motocross display, a Spitfire fly-past, funfair and bouncy castles, not forgetting a busy supporting race programme for saloons and single seaters.

Then on Monday it is time to turn the clock back with Touring cars of a much earlier vintage being put through their paces, along with sports and GT cars, in an evocative programme, the Masters Top Hat Historic Car Raceday.

Expect to see Ford Zephyrs and Zodiacs, Austin A35s and A40s, various Jaguars, Rileys and Standards, while the ‘Cloth Cap' action centres on sports-cars of the 1950s and 1960s with a special class for Jaguar XKs while cars of a more recent era will be in ‘Stars of the 70s' action with big Morgan Plus 8, Ford Capris and TVRs in action.

Adult on day admission is: Saturday £13, Sunday £28, Monday £12. Children aged 15 years and under, accompanied by an adult are admitted FREE on each day.
