Starters Orders for the Melbourne Fun Run - 20th April
| Published: 2nd April 2008 23:27 |
The Melbourne Fun Run is not until 20th April, but already entries are coming in. There will be two events - the 12km Rabbit Race, and the 6km Funny Bunny Run, (or walk, or jog) for the less ambitious. Entries for the Rabbit Race, which incorporates a team competition for the "Melbourne Bragging Rights Trophy", close on 31st March, while the joggers in the "Funny Bunny Run" can enter on the day.
Organiser John Burney, on behalf of the promoters, Melbourne Rotary Club, said "we would like everyone to enter early, so we have some idea of numbers. We are giving all runners a free t-shirt with the event logo printed on it, so we need to order these in advance."
As well as a t-shirt, Funny Bunny Runners will each be given a rabbit costume, (in the form of a pair of fluffy ears), and there will be free face painting for the children.
Both events will start by the Pool, at 11 am, and finish at the Leisure Centre. Here is a description of the route and a map of the course:
"The 6k Funny Bunny Run will start by the Pool, next to Melbourne Hall; follow Pool Road, then bear left along the farm track to Wilson; through the village, and bear left towards Melbourne, then immediately right onto the old railway track footpath. Follow the footpath as far as Station Road, then left towards Melbourne; at Castle Street, turn left, and continue to Church Street; turn right, to the top of Church Street, and continue up High Street to finish at The Leisure Centre.
The 12k Rabbit Run will follow the same course as far as The Leisure Centre, then continue along High Street and Ashby Road, as far as Robinsons Hill; turn right up the hill, then at the top, left along The Common, as far as Broadstone Lane. Turn left here, and continue as far as the Reservoir; left, alongside the Reservoir, and past the Visitor Centre, to exit via Calke Lane onto Ashby Road. Turn left towards Melbourne, then right on Penn Lane; down Penn Lane to Salsbury Lane, then left and left again onto Church Street, to finish as above, at The Leisure Centre.
Lord Ralph Kerr will act as Starter for both events; the 12k Rabbit Run will start first, at 11.00 am, followed 5 minutes later by the fun runners."

The team race, with four to score, should give all the sports clubs, pubs and other village organisations the chance to show their strength, and the winners will have the local "bragging rights" for a year - expect to see some keen competition between the rugby players and footballers, the scouts and cadets, and all the local pub teams.
The Rotary Club intend to make this an annual fund-raising event, and this year will be supporting four main charities - When You Wish Upon a Star, Nightingale MacMillan Care, the British Heart Foundation, and Cancer Research U.K. All entrants are expected to raise sponsorship for their run, and can choose which charity should benefit from their efforts.
