Staunton Harold and National Forest Walking Festival - 16/27 May
| Published: 2nd May 2008 20:32 |
A new leaflet and two walking festivals are giving a boost to walking in the National Forest.
Staunton Harold ReservoirLeicestershire County Council's leaflet, Walking Through Time - Staunton Harold, encourages people to explore the historic area on foot.
The first ever National Forest Walking Festival, Footsteps in the Forest, from May 17 to 26, will feature a host of events and, later in the summer, Leicestershire's own Walking Festival comes to the National Forest with a one-day feast of walks on July 5, all starting at Snibston Discovery Centre.
Walks in the new leaflet all start from Staunton Harold Hall, near the Ferrers Arts and Crafts Centre.
Featuring three routes from two miles to 6½ miles, the walks help people explore the countryside and highlight the history of the area, featuring ancient churches, development of the Staunton estate and hidden influences that have shaped the picturesque landscape.
Copies are available in local libraries, at www.leics.gov.uk/paths or can be requested by e-mailing footpaths@leics.gov.uk
Footsteps in the Forest, the first ever National Forest Walking Festival, features 37 guided walks. Walks in Leicestershire include an 11 mile hike with the Rambler's Association through new woods and an evening wildlife walk where walkers will need to bring a torch.

The Leicestershire Walking Festival, organised by the County Council, has lots of walks and other activities so people can try out different things and find something for everyone to enjoy.
The event, on July 5, includes one-hour strolls, nature walks, longer rambles, an orienteering taster or a guided walk with mobility scooters. Snibston Country Park, behind the Discovery Centre, is a great place to amble around and explore.
The site is close to Coalville and its good public transport links, yet footpaths from the site take walkers straight out into the surprisingly rural countryside beyond.
