The Alexander Technique

Published: 19th January 2008 10:51

The Alexander Technique

If you suffer from a bad back, tense shoulders, tension headaches, exhaustion or have a real pain in the neck - one that isn't caused by the kids - you could benefit from the Alexander Technique.
In today's busy lifestyles, people tend to carry huge amounts of tension in their bodies, which results in physical symptoms. According to the experts, the Alexander Technique is a great way of learning how to rid harmful tension in your body.
It is a method that works to change movement habits to improve symptoms of pain by improving freedom of movement, balance, support and co-ordination. Those that practise the technique could become more relaxed, balanced, confident and pain-free.

Who can benefit?
Because the technique focuses on body movement and co-ordination, many dancers, actors, circus performers, musicians and some Olympic athletes are taught the technique, which dates back to the 1890s.
It is also useful for people suffering from joint pains, tension headaches, breathing disorders, stress-related conditions, stuttering or voice problems. Pregnant women may also find it useful in preparation for childbirth.

How it works
The basic principle of the Alexander Technique is that you avoid overworking your neck muscles so your head balances effortlessly on top of your spine. Teachers of the technique claim the relationship between the head and spine affects the entire body: if the relationship is stressed this has ramifications throughout the body.
Young children possess the perfect natural poise for the human body. When you were a toddler, you would have naturally walked, played and sat with an erect spine and almost regal posture. This correct posture withers over time and you will have developed some bad habits along the way - slouching, hunching over a desk, lying on the sofa all evening and so forth.
Our bodies are under far more strain and pressure than they were designed for. The technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. The Alexander Technique could help you find a new balance in your body by releasing unnecessary tension. It can be applied to sitting, lying down, standing, walking, lifting and other daily activities.
An Alexander Technique teacher helps you understand how your movement style contributes to any recurring difficulties, whether it's a bad back, neck and shoulder pain, restricted breathing, exhaustion or limitations in performing a task or sport. Your whole movement pattern is analysed, not just your symptoms. You will be alerted to your bad habits that encourage the build-up of tension in your body.
Teachers of the technique aim to strip away your bad habits and restore your naturally balanced poise, which you were born with.

Where to find out more
Although the Alexander Technique is about how you can learn to re-educate your body movements, instruction from a qualified tutor is essential. Contact the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) for more information or to find an instructor near you by logging on to http://www.stat.org.uk/ or telephoning 020 7284 3338.
