CAMPAIGN AGAINST COMMERCIAL WHALING

Media Release
For immediate release 22 May 2007

Celebrities join in to help Save the Whale!

Kate Humble, Nick Baker, Nigel Marven, Nizlopi and State of Undress have joined WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society to support Save the Whale Week (18 - 23 June 2007) and their campaign against commercial whaling.

"The worlds' oceans and its whales face enough pressures from mans negative and not fully understood impact without us recommencing commercial whaling, which has proven to be unsustainable and cruel. Save the Whale week serves to remind us that now is no time to be complacent if the world's populations of these magnificent denizens of our planet are to survive." TV presenter, author and naturalist, Nick Baker.

WDCS is now giving everyone the chance to do something to help the great whales by taking part in Save the Whale Week from 18 - 24 June. Supporters and members of the public are invited to hold a party or special event during Save the Whale Week.

WDCS's Fenella Gerry said, "Last year our supporters did everything, from a coffee morning to a picnic in Hyde Park. Holding your own event can be fun and there are plenty of other ways to get involved too, from selling our stop whaling badges to holding a dress down day in schools and offices, the money our supporters raise could go towards the translation of a vital document, or sending one of our scientists to the International Whaling Commission meetings and everyone can make a real difference."

WDCS fundraising packs to help you get involved during Save the Whale week are made from entirely recycled, post-consumer waste, and there are two versions available, one for adults and one for children. The children's pack contains details of schools literacy competition.

To get hold of your free Save the Whale Week pack, which includes ideas of how to hold your own event, the Big Red Bus sticker poster, sponsorship forms and much more, or to find out how to host your own fundraising web page on our Save the Whale Week website, visit our website at www.savethewhale.org.uk or call WDCS on 01249 449500.

Save the Whale Week is part of WDCS's Stop Bloody Whaling campaign, which aims to put an end to the cruel, unnecessary and uncontrollable commercial whaling industry. This summer will see crucial decisions on the fate of the world's great whales being made at two major meetings - the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Visit our website www.stopbloodywhaling.org for more information on our campaign.
