WILDLIFE TRUST TO CELEBRATE MARINE WEEK
1st August, 2007
Devon Wildlife Trust is this month preparing for an array of marine themed events at its Wembury Marine Centre and North Devon Voluntary Marine Conservation Area to coincide with this year's national Marine Week the annual celebration of our seas which runs from 4 to 19 August.
The events will include rockpool rambles, talks, a willow creature workshop, a guided strandline walk and an open evening of Wembury Marine Centre.
Cat Ridout, Marine Awareness Officer at Wembury Marine Centre said: "Everyone loves to visit the beach during the summer holidays and this is a great time to see the variety of creatures that live in the rockpools and further offshore. However marine life is often hidden from view and rarely gets the attention it deserves."
"Our marine environment is also under threat. Less than 0.001% of the UK's sea is currently protected by law from harmful activities and we need a Marine Bill to improve the situation for many of the species that make our shores their home. Marine Week gives us the opportunity to get this important message across to a wider audience."
During Marine Week Devon Wildlife Trust is asking the public to sign a giant ‘Petition Fish' asking the Government to commit to its Marine Bill. It will be based at Wembury Marine Centre.
For more information about the Marine Week events at Wembury visit www.wemburymarinecentre.org or call 01752 862538 and for the North Devon events visit www.devonwildlifetrust.org or call 01392 279244.
If people are unable to make it to any of the events they can still celebrate the week by doing one or more of the following:
1. Pick up litter from the beach- it can cut, choke and poison sea animals.
2. Never flush things like cotton buds, plastic wrappers and sanitary waste down the toilet, put it in the bin - otherwise it may end up in the sea.
3. Look for ‘environmentally friendly' labels when you're shopping for detergents, washing powder and toilet cleaner. They won't pollute the sea as badly.
4. Let us know whenever you see anything unusual like a dolphin, basking shark or turtle.
5. Become a member of the Devon Wildlife Trust and support the work we do to protect the seas.
