FUNDING BOOST FOR LOCAL HEATH
17th July, 2007
Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) is this month celebrating after receiving a grant of over £23,000 for conservation work at its Bovey Heathfield Local Nature Reserve near Bovey Tracey.
The money has been awarded by the SITA Trust through the Landfill Communities Fund with a contribution of £2439 from Teignbridge District Council to help the continuing restoration of the site.
The programme of work has begun with gorse and bracken clearance to encourage heathland plants to recover. Over the coming months work will also include pond creation to encourage dragonflies to breed on site along with re-profiling of some of the bare tracks left from the days when the site was used for illegal off-road activity.
Andy Bakere, DWT's Nature Reserves Officer said: ‘This grant will give the site the extra boost to get it up to a favourable condition for the rare wildlife that makes Bovey Heathfield its home. Species that will benefit include the nightjar, stonechat and all the common species of reptile.‘
