Exeter Airport is going smoke-free early
Exeter International will be a non-smoking environment from 1 April
A Devon airport is to go completely smoke-free three months earlier than the government deadline.
From 1 April, Exeter International Airport's terminal building will become an entirely non-smoking environment.
This is ahead of the smoke-free legislation which is due to come into force on 1 July.
For the past four years the airport has had a no-smoking policy in most of the building, but it has been possible to smoke near the air-side bars.
That facility will cease in two weeks and passengers will be advised that the last cigarette before their flight should be before entering the building.
Making the announcement on National No Smoking Day, Airport Managing Director John Spooner said: "In line with the legislation the airport recognises that a person - whether passenger, visitor or staff member - has the right to be protected from harm of second-hand smoke.
"We have decided to enforce this legislation earlier than legally required as a direct result of feedback from passengers and staff and before the airport gets into full swing with summer passengers."
Passengers who wish to smoke will be asked to do so outside the terminal in designated areas.
