Devon employers urged: "file online now and pick up £150"
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is urging small employers in Devon to file their 2006-07 Employer Annual Return online now, to receive a £150 tax-free payment.
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, online filing is the quickest and easiest way for all employers to meet their obligation to inform HMRC of the tax and national insurance payments made by their employees in the last financial year.
Don MacArthur, Director of HMRC's Employer Programme, said:
"Filing online is the fastest and simplest way to submit your return, and smaller employers who do so can receive a £150 tax-free payment.
"We are accepting online returns now, so don't wait for the 19 May deadline, send it as soon as it's ready."
Employers who file online via HMRC's internet PAYE service are also able to benefit from a range of practical help to ensure they file their returns correctly. These include tools such an error alert that highlights mistakes in their returns, which reduces the chance of a penalty for filing incorrect information.
Any employers who would like help, tips and the latest expert advice on online filing for 2006-07 can visit the HMRC website at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/efiling/help/mainhelp.htm or call the HMRC Employer Helpline on 08457 143 143.
Employers with digital media access can also get help by downloading the HMRC Employers PAYE podcast from: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/podcasts
HMRC has also produced an Employers CD-Rom with general information on PAYE and End of Year filing do's and don'ts.
Notes to editors
1. Each year approximately 1.8 million large, medium and small-sized employers are required to file an Employer Annual Return.
2. Last year, around 1.1m employers filed online and on time.
3. Employers with 50 or more employees must file their returns online or face a penalty of at least £100.
4. Employers with fewer than 50 employees who file a valid return online can get a £150 tax-free payment.
5. Smaller employers who use intermediaries such as agents or payroll bureaus to file a return on their behalf are still eligible for the £150 payment.
6. HMRC's online returns service applies quality checks to all returns and rejects those with errors. The submitter receives a message immediately after it is rejected, explaining why. Errors must be corrected and then the return resubmitted to register as filed.
7. The HMRC Employers CD-ROM can be ordered via the HMRC website at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/employers/cdrom
