Teignbridge Swimmers raise £3275 for Marie Curie Cancer Care

Swimmers who participated in Swimathon 2007 at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre have risen over £3275 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

The money came from 37 swimmers who took part in the event, and contributed to the £1.4M raised across the UK.  This will help provide free high quality nursing to give terminally ill people the choice of dying at home supported by their families.

Cllr Anne Fry, Teignbridge Executive Spokesperson for Community Services said:

"We are delighted that so many Teignbridge customers got in and swam for Marie Curie Cancer Care and we are thrilled with how much money was raised.

"I would like to congratulate everyone who swam in Swimathon 2007.  Their efforts will help make a real difference to the lives of terminally ill cancer patients and their families in the local community."

Annette Drewett who was the local organiser said:

"Swimathon was a really fun event to organise and it brought out a fantastic community spirit at the pool. Many of the spectators who came to support friends and family on the day said they would like to join in next year, so we're looking forward to an even bigger turnout for Swimathon 2008."

Seventy per cent of all money raised by Swimathon 2007 will go directly to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The additional thirty per cent of funds raised goes to The Swimathon Foundation which provides funding for smaller, local charities and other not-for-profit organisations, which benefit the health and wellbeing of people throughout the UK.

Entries for Swimathon 2008 open in January 2008.  You can enter, or obtain further details via:
