The Wildflower Patch
Although the cultivated, non-native garden flowers almost all die back, my stock of wildflower plants, native to Coventry and Warwickshire, keep going well into December.
The patio-pots by my back door are filled with Cuckooflower, also known as Lady's Smock and loved by the Orange Tip butterfly; fragrant Wild Chamomile and Kidney Vetch. The latter, even in winter, displays bright yellow flower-heads. Growing, as it does, by the coast, as well as inland, I guess it has to be fairly resilient!
The Star of Bethlehem bulbs show their shoots in time for Christmas. I planted them alongside more Cuckooflower with its delicate pink-streaked, white petals. These combined with Britain's only native, wild Daffodil look stunning in spring-time. And with the addition of the trailing Yellow Pimpernel the vibrant, native flora are eye-catching into the summer and beyond.
