Council Says Thank You With Free Compost
There's free compost to be claimed this month as Teignbridge Council's ever popular Compost Giveaway days return for 2008!
Recycling in Teignbridge rose to more than 50% in 2006/07, when official figures were last released by DEFRA, revealing the authority to be the best in the South-West for recycling. For the second year in a row it also placed Teignbridge in the national top ten recyclers. As a big thank you to customers, Teignbridge is giving some of their garden waste back - as top-quality compost.
Over the next two weekends, Teignbridge residents can come and claim compost from council staff. The first giveaway takes place at the Outer Car Park, Dawlish Warren on Saturday 10th May, with a second to follow at Forde House Car Park, Newton Abbot on Saturday 17th May. Each giveaway starts at 10am and finishes at 1pm. Cllr Gordon Hook will be coming along on Saturday 10th May at 10.30am to lend a hand. Photographers are invited to attend.
Teignbridge staff will help 'bag' the compost during the giveaways; and while some bags will be provided numbers are limited, so customers are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.
Cllr Gordon Hook, Teignbridge Executive Spokesperson for Environmental Services said:
"With summer just around the corner, now is a perfect time for people to be getting back out in their gardens and exercising their green fingers. What better way to help than with some top-quality free compost?
"Our recycling and waste reduction results are superb, and they wouldn't be possible without the hard work of local residents who have shown a fantastic commitment to recycling.
"This is an opportunity for us to give something back and say thank you to those who have helped make Teignbridge such a strong recycler.
"Our giveaway days always prove popular, and previously we've seen large queues of customers lining up to collect the compost. We expect more of the same this time! Our recycling officers will also be on hand to provide advice about recycling and assistance with the compost."
As an added bonus, Teignbridge will also be offering reduced price home composting cones for sale at the events. Two types will be available, a 220 litre standard cone for £11.50, or a larger 300 litre version for £15.50.
