Formosa Wants Urgent Wellington Traffic Lights Review

Wellington treated as poor relation to Taunton
A review of new traffic lights which cause delays for motorists and danger for pedestrians in Wellington has been demanded by aspiring Conservative MP Mark Formosa.
The traffic lights control the crossroads junction outside the town's newly-built - but as yet unused - supermarket, off High Street. Previously, two-way flows of traffic were possible along High Street, with vehicles exiting Longforth Road when the main stream was on red. But now drivers are forced to accept one-way traffic in each of the four directions of the re-styled junction, resulting in long queues forming at peak times.

To make matters worse, pedestrians trying to cross Longforth Road do not have the ‘green man' assistance which is available to protect them in High Street and in the Red Lion Court approach road to the new development.
Mark Formosa said:
"This new junction and its traffic lights are a legacy of the old Liberal Democrat regime at Somerset County Council which treated Wellington as a poor relation to Taunton.
They were the same people who allowed Wellington's traders to suffer more than a year of disruption and loss of business caused by the poorly-managed temporary traffic lights when the new supermarket was being built.
If this had been the centre of Taunton, then I cannot believe it would have been allowed to happen. I can see little difference in the size of the junction compared to how it was in the former Kwik Save supermarket days, when drivers could travel in both directions along High Street and even turn right into Longforth Road.
Now that we have a more caring and considerate Conservative administration in County Hall after the recent county council elections, I am asking for an urgent review of the set up of this junction so we can make traffic flow more smoothly and also to improve safety for people crossing the road."
