SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS

At a meeting of the Environment Services in July, a Mr Roy Paver sought the Town Councils support for his campaign to reduce the usage of plastic bags in Newton Abbot. He produced some interesting information:
Every year an estimated 17.5 billion plastic bags are given away by supermarkets. This is equivalent to over 290 bags for every person in the UK.
Plastic bags are detrimental to our wildlife and environment and also cost us money
Plastic bags add millions per year to our grocery bills and, thanks to wind-bourne litter, we also pay for them through our taxes and council rates to fund waste and litter management.
The Town council decided to support Mr Paver's campaign initiative and a grant of £500 will be awarded towards promoting this campaign, possibly via the Retail Consortium and Newton Abbot & District Chamber of Trade & Commerce.
I heartly endorce this campaign.
We are lucky insofar as being a Health food shop, generally our customers are all too aware of the impact plastic bags have on the environment. Our customers are usually, only too happy to accept a re-cycled bag and indeed many of our customers use a conventional shopping bag!
At the shop, we sell organic cotton shopping bags for only £1.49. These bags can be used for a very long time. They will take quite a heavy load and the handles do not cut into your fingers like plastic bags!. They can also be washed may times.
So customers please take your own shopping bag when visiting supermarkets and smaller, independent shops.
