Panel considers new Gypsy pitches
An independent panel in Exeter will consider proposals published by the South West Regional Assembly (SWRA). The proposals were based on findings of local councils across the region, from Gloucestershire to Cornwall. The Environment Secretary will approve the final numbers of residential and transit pitches. The exact locations will be considered by local planning authorities at a later date. Illegal encampments Interested parties were given three months to respond to the proposals, which aim to tackle a shortfall in Gypsy and traveller sites and a problem of illegal encampments. Councillor Mike Bawden, chairman of the assembly's regional planning group, said: "This examination in public will give invited participants and the independent panel an opportunity to discuss the region's proposals. "The responses from all those who took the time to respond to this important consultation will be considered. "This process should ensure that government responds to the needs of both the South West's travelling and settled communities."
