£45k Upgrade for Newton Abbot Shopmobility
Work gets under way this week on a £45k upgrade for Shopmobility in Newton Abbot.
Among the improvements, to be made over a 12 week period, is a redesign of the interior, making it more spacious, while expanding the building under the entrance ramp of the multi-storey car park. The result will enable easier access to the centre, moving the entrance away from people queuing for buses at the
Sherbourne Roadbus stops.
The project has been designed and managed by Teignbridge Council, and will be completed by contractors Hannon Young Ltd with funding from Devon County Council.
Cllr David Corney-Walker, Teignbridge Executive Spokesperson for Economic Development said:
"Shopmobility is an essential resource for the town centre and is used by both local and visiting shoppers. These works will mean a larger facility with better access, enabling disabled and elderly people to better enjoy Newton Abbot's fantastic range of shopping experiences.
"This project will be well managed, with work phased over a number of weeks to avoid inconvenience and disruption - placing the primary focus on Shopmobility's customers. I look forward to seeing the end result in a few months time."
During the work Shopmobility will continue to offer a full service to its customers, and contractors will be working closely with the Council and Shopmobility to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.
Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said:
"Shopmobility provides manual and powered wheelchairs and scooters to help people with limited mobility to shop and use town centre facilities. It can be used by young or old no matter whether their disability is temporary or permanent. Shopmobility is available both to residents and visitors alike.
"Devon County Council set out its objectives for improving accessibility in the Local Transport Plan, and it good to see this improvement to the Newton Abbot facility progressing. The County is pleased to be working in partnership with Teignbridge Council and the Shopmobility Trustees to deliver this improvement."
