WEMBURY MARINE CENTRE OPENS FOR NEW SEASON
2nd April, 2008
The Wembury Marine Centre, near Plymouth is about to open its doors again for another season of marine education, fun and activities.
The Centre has been shut over the winter months and will open again on Saturday 5 April with a rockpool ramble on Wembury beach at 11am. The beach is one of the best places to go rockpooling in the UK due to its wide expanse of rocky foreshore.
This will be the first event for the Centre's two new volunteer assistant marine wardens, Chris and Kym. They have each started a six month placement at the Centre and will continue training over the next few weeks to be ready for a packed schedule of events over the coming months.
The assistant marine wardens work alongside the marine awareness officer organising and leading a programme of summer events for the public such as rockpool rambles, beach cleans and guided walks, working with schools, liaising with the local community and publicising the Centre and associated Voluntary Marine Conservation Area.
Devon Wildlife Trust's Cat Ridout who runs the Centre in South Devon says: ‘It's great to be embarking on another busy season for the Centre. Wembury has proved popular over the last few years since we refurbished the Centre in 2006 and if the summer weather is better this year we should attract even more visitors this season.'
Wembury Marine Centre features a marine jukebox, marine fish tanks, a computer game and jigsaws for the kids and information on the marine environment for all ages. The Centre is overseen by the Wembury partnership made up of Devon Wildlife Trust, Devon County Council, South Hams District Council and the National Trust and last year attracted over 20,000 visitors.
