Get Ready For ‘The Fabulous Walks'!
Phil Smith - The Crab Man, in association with Teignbridge Council and the Arts Council England, is bringing a mini-festival of all-new performance walks to Teignbridge this summer: The Fabulous Walks!
Tickets for The Fabulous Walks go on sale this week, offering local residents and summer visitors the opportunity to take part in a unique experience this July. Taking place between 25th and 27th July (inclusive) each 'performance-walk' features a unique blend of story telling, live theatre, public participation, and of course Teignbridge's fascinating heritage and famous landscape.
The performance walks will last between 1 and 2 hours each, and will return walkers to their starting point. There will be a variety of walks on offer, each performed four times over the weekend. Tickets cost just £5 each (£3 Concessions) and are available now at Teignbridge Tourist Information Centres.
To celebrate the official launch of the walks, The Crab Man Phil Smith will be performing live at Dawlish Warren Outdoor Amusements on Wednesday 7th May at 10am. Cllr Anna Klinkenberg, Chairman of Teignbridge Council, will also be on hand.
Crab Man Phil Smith promises a fabulous experience for those taking part in this year's walks:
"We've called the walks "fabulous" because our walks have always turned up something unexpected and wondrous, but also because we'll be looking at fables this year: the stories of and from the places we'll be walking through and performing in.
"A performance walk is like a guided tour, but with a large helping of theatre or performance thrown in. Last year's performance walks were a big success, including performances that took their audience into a secret chapel in a monastery garden, that traced the history of radio waves across the Haldon Hills, and that offered its audience a Calvados in Calvados Close, Chudleigh.
"The walks vary in length and difficulty, but they all aim to equally amaze, amuse and engage! And this year they will be fabulous!"
Cllr David Corney-Walker, Teignbridge Executive Spokesperson for Economic Development and Tourism said:
"The Crab Man's walks always amaze, excite and engage, and have become a staple of summers in Teignbridge. They offer a rare opportunity to learn more about the fascinating area we live in, while also having great fun and enjoying the beautiful outdoors.
"Residents and visitors alike will be enthralled by these unique events, which will help make summer in Teignbridge all the more memorable."
Since creating The Crab Walks, performed in beach huts at Teignmouth and Coryton Cove in 2004, The Crab Man has been regularly creating entertainments and storytelling based on walking in South Devon.
Last year he teamed up with the designer Anoushka Athique and performer Katie Etheridge to create a whole project of performance walks, with a special show called 'Rescued From The History Hut' performed in local tea shops, pubs, tents and in Haldon Forest.
Following the success of this project Katie and Anoushka are back again this summer and joined by Simon Persighetti of Exeter's renowned performers Wrights & Sites. Together with Phil and four new performers, including musicians and dancers from South Devon, they will be making the Teignbridge summer fascinating, fun and fabulous!
