Julia's House - The Dorset Children's Hospice
| Published: 11th March 2008 18:54 |

Julia's House has been set up to provide a much needed care for life-limiting and life threatening illnesses in children throughout the county of Dorset. The majority of these children are not expected to live into adulthood, which means that their families are coping with their enormously complex medical needs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and often for many years.
This was highlighted by Julia Perks who recognised these needs as well as raising awareness of the needs for more respite for the families of the children.
Care for the Child, there for the Family
In 1997, Julia a talented and dedicated paediatric nurse sadly lost her battle with cancer. Her family, friends and colleagues knew of her dedication and commitment in helping these children and their families and set up the Julia Perks Foundation, now known as Julia's House - The Dorset Children's Hospice.
The charity concentrates in three main areas of support:
- Due to the lack of funding, the charity chose to help children and families in there own home. This allowed them to provide dedicated care where it was needed much sooner, 2 appointed children's community nurses headed up the team in 2003.
- In March 2006, Julia's House was completed and officially opened; this facility provides day care for up to ten children at a time. The house can give the children a sense of security offering them a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Parents can leave their children at the hospice knowing that they are receiving the best possible care.
To help with the above, there are 90 care nurses and 150 volunteers with 6 charity shops around Dorset.
