Debbie I became interested in Sign Language because my mother- in-law and her husband are both profoundly deaf. I became frustrated at the lack of communication. There are only so many times you can talk about the weather! So I took myself off and enrolled in an evening class and passed my British Sign Language Level 1. I then went onto complete my BSL Level 2. To develop my signing skills even further, I worked at Bournemouth and Poole College for a couple of years as a Communication Support Worker. I have worked part time for Sign it! since it was founded in 2003 and assist in the day-to-day running of the Outreach Centre.

Nigel Seymour I became interested in sign language as my partners sister is profoundly deaf. I wanted to use my sign language skills, so started by volunteering at Sign it! I now work full time here and haven't looked back! In my spare time I head up the Poole Town Deaf Football Team, and have recently passed Football Coaching Course. It's great fun and good exercise!!

Emma Seymour-Keith I grew up around signing with my profoundly deaf sister. I have recently passed BSL Level 3 Certificate. I was introduced to Sign it! whilst they were assisting my sister with a house move. I thought the work they were doing to take the pressure from families was great! It allowed me to be a sister and a friend, rather than just her admin helper. I decided to become a volunteer to help others in the same situation. I work for Nationwide Building Society part time, and am now getting more involved with Sign it!

Name what? - Maggie Latham Live Where? - West Moors. Work where? - Poole Hospital Why have I introduced myself in this way? It's how a deaf person would ask you these questions in Sign Language. So Volunteer why? Having moved into the area in 2005, I was looking for somewhere I could continue to improve my signing skills and I came into contact with Sign it! If you know Rob the rest is history. His enthusiasm should be notifiable as a contagious disease and a visit to the Outreach Centre quickly resulted in my becoming a volunteer. Do what? Whatever is requested - Each session at the Outreach Centre provides an interesting challenge and I can be doing anything from filing, looking for jobs/accommodation, writing letters, internet research, visits with the team members and so on. The team are great to work with (but don't let them know I said that!) Maybe I will see you there sometime. |
