BARKING v ETON MANOR 7-11-09

PRESS OFFICER'S NOTES
Good afternoon ladies, gentlemen, girls and boys. Today, in our 130th season and our 3rd century,we are happy to welcome the players, supporters and officials of Eton Manor and we hope that they have safely negotiated their long journey from the home dressing room to the away dressing room. This is our 29th meeting and the 1st was on the 26th of November 1898 when we were Barking Working Lads' Institute and they were Eton Mission with us winning an away match 1-0. Our 1st meeting in senior football was in the F A Amateur Cup on 22-9-1934 resulting in a home 3-1 win for us.
We also welcome of course our own supporters, any uncommitted visitors and those most important people the referee and assistants, without whom we would have no game. We hope that you enjoy your visit and that we all have a safe journey home.
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
As tomorrow is Remembrance Sunday we ask you to join us in 2 minutes' silence before the kick off as a tribute to all those who have died and been wounded and are still doing so in defence of our freedom. To quote Laurence Binyon "They grow not old as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them or the years condemn. We shall remember them."
TODAY'S GAME
It is only due to the hard work, dedication and generosity both in time and money of the people who voluntarily keep the club going that we are able to continue in our 130th season and our 4th in the Essex Senior League. Victory in today's Essex Senior League match could, subject to other results, take us up 2 places to 13th while 3 points could also take Manor up 2 places to 9th.
They are currently 11th with 11 points from 9 games, 4 places and 4 points above us but having played 2 more games so if we win we will be 1 point behind with 2 games in hand whereas if they are successful they will extend the gap to 7 points .
Last season we won at home in August 1-0 but lost away in October 2-0. We have won just 1 of our last 5 meetings with Manor winning the other 4.
REFRESHMENTS
Refreshments can be obtained before the game and at half time from the boardroom window where our indefatigable volunteers Maureen,Ron and Steve Debenham will be eagerly waiting to serve you , no doubt aided by extra volunteers in order to cope with the crowds.
OUR VISITORS
We hope that Eton Manor safely negotiated the long journey from the home dressing room to the away quarters.
Eton Mission was founded in Hackney Wick in 1880 by masters and pupils of Eton College and its activities included football both at adult and youth level.Early games were played in Victoria Park and London Fields and they were instrumental in securing the use of Hackney Marshes for football. In 1896-7 they won the Middlesex Junior Cup. The Mission club evolved into Eton Manor and played in the London, Aetolian, Greater London and Metropolitan Leagues, joining the Essex Senior League in 1975 and won the London League 4 times, the London League Cup and the Greater London League and were Essex Senior Cup finalists once. Former players include Dagenham's own Sir Alf Ramsey, England's only world cup winning manager.
Eton Manor have been successful in the league in recent seasons ,finishing 6th last season and 4th the previous season. In 2007-8 they reached the finals of the League Cup, which they won by beating champions Concord Rangers 3-2, and of the Gordon Brasted Trophy in which they lost 2-3 to Concord Rangers. Last season they freached the Gordon Brasted semi final.
They are currently 11th with 11 points from 9 games, 4 places and 4 points above us but having played 2 more games so if we win we will be 1 point behind with 2 games in hand whereas if they are successful they will extend the gap to 7 points .They have recovered well after losing their 1st 3 games and drawing the next 2 ,so having just 2 points from their 1st 15.They have beaten Mauritius Sports Association 2-1 and 4-1 and Sawbridgeworth Town 2-0 (their most recent game played last Saturday) and drawn 1-1 with both Enfield 1893 and Southend Manor. They have lost just 1 of their last 5 league games.
They were undefeated in winning their League Cup group as follows- v Basildon United 2-2/3-2 and v Clapton 3-3/1-0 and they play Tiptree United in the quarter final. They lost 2-1 to Stanway Rovers in the F A Cup and 2-0 to Erith Town in the F A Vase.
Their leading scorers are Dean Frett, Courtney Linton and Danny Clarke -a familiar name to Barking supporters -all with 5.

SQUAD NEWS
Ricky Mackin is available again after serving his 1 game suspension
Abraham Adejokun completes his 3 match suspension today
Chris Clark is expected to be suspended for 3 games following his dismissal against Clapton . The games involved will depend on when notification is issued
Club physiotherapist Alan Richards reports that-
Craig Leader, who was injured during the Stansted match ,has a fractured ankle and is still in splints . He is expected to be out until at least Christmas
Mequel de Souza strained a calf against Bethnal Green and is expected to be out for at least 5-6 weeks
Ruel Sandiford has a hamstring tendon injury
Mark Steadman is still suffering from an ankle injury but has resumed light training
There is no news of Mark Doyle
In addition I ( DP) spoke to Matt Malton at the Clapton game and received the good news that he has resumed training and is very eager to get back if selected
RECENT AND FORTHCOMING MATCHES
We achieved an excellent 1-0 victory over Bowers and Pitsea and then controversy struck again in our away match with Clapton when we had to play 50 minutes with 10 men and Sam Dennis in goal following the dismissal of Chris Clark. The dismissal was probably less controversial than the disallowing of 2 of our goals for alleged offside with both decisions open to doubt. Despite the handicap we took the lead but could not hold on and lost 3-1 with 2 of the ‘Tons' goals coming in the last 4 minutes.
However we are still only 5 points off mid table with games in hand and, with 27 games left to play , we are only 10 points below 3rd place so there is plenty of scope to improve our position.
We continue our league programme next Saturday with a visit to Barkingside and then are at home to London APSA on the following Saturday. We have not beaten Barkingside away since we joined the Essex Senior League having lost twice and drawn once in the league and drawn in the league cup.
RESERVES
Rob O'Brien and Jeff Sears's reserves are enjoying a very successful run and are unbeaten in our last 6 league games (won 2 drawn 4) . We are now 6th , 3 points behind 4th place with 2 games in hand. Our unbeaten run includes 4 games against teams in the top 5 and our 2 victories were against top of the table Heybridge Swifts Reserves 4-0 and 2nd placed Great Wakering Rovers Reserves 5-4. Our most recent results were 2-2 away to Bowers and Pitsea Reserves (scorers Joe Turner and Hamzy Jomanday) and a superb 4-0 victory away to league leaders Heybridge Swifts Reserves (Joe Turner 3,David Baronowski) .
We have a busy cup schedule with a home Brian Hitchings Memorial Trophy semi final v Grays Athletic Reserves on last Tuesday (these notes had to be written before the game) , a trip to Benfleet in the 2nd round of the Essex Saturday Premier Cup (formerly Intermediate Cup) today and a Combination Cup quarter final at home to Thurrock Reserves on tuesday.
YOUTH TEAMS
Last Sunday our Under 18s lost 1-0 away to Bethnal Green and the Under 16s lost 2-1 at home to Chelmsford City. The Under 15s result v Ryan is not known at the time of writing.
HISTORIC PROGRAMME
I (DP) have been offered the chance to buy a very rare programme which I have accepted. It is for the FA Amateur Cup final on 9-4-1927 played at Millwall's ground. This was our only appearance in the final and we lost 3-1 to Leyton. It is expensive and I will have to cut down on the champagne at breakfast and sack some of the staff but it is worth it as I never expected to see one . I would sell my vintage 1950s clothes but I am still wearing them . I should have the programme by the next home game and will feature it in the notes. It survived in an album containing all the Millwall home programmes for that season.

Don't forget the website at www.Barking-fc.co.uk created and managed by our superb webmaster Terry Gilbert.

HELP WANTED
Volunteers are urgently required to augment the few dedicated people who are keeping the club going. Currently due to various circumstances there are fewer people assisting than previously. John and Gill Faherty are trying to co-ordinate an effort to bring more volunteers to the club and thereby spread the workload more evenly. If you feel that can spare some time either before or after a match or in any other capacity that will provide assistance to the club then please see John or Gill after any home game and they will be happy to provide further details. Alternatively if you prefer to e-mail the address is secretary@barking-fc.co.uk
