New regulations with regards to CRB checks and the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS)

From 10 Sept:
1. There will be 2 levels of enhanced CRB check;
- The 1st is an enhanced CRB with the barred list check.
- The 2nd is an enhanced CRB without the barred list check.
If an individual receives no supervision whilst undertaking their job, then an enhanced CRB with the barred list check information would be appropriate; however, if an individual does receive supervision, then an enhanced CRB without the barred list check would be appropriate instead.
2. There will be a new definition of what is deemed regulated activity, relating to whether a person receives supervision or not and how much actual contact they have with children and or vulnerable adults;
3. Controlled activity will no longer exist;
4. You will not be able to CRB check someone under the age of 16;
5. You will not be allowed to ask for an enhanced CRB with barred list check for trustees of charities as they no longer come under regulated activity because of their position as an `office holder'. You can, however, request an enhanced CRB without the barred list.
From December:
The CRB and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) will be merged into one organisation called the Disclosure Barring Service (DBS).
Early in 2013
1. A new update service will be introduced - this means portability for CRB checks. Although in order for this to be fully portable other measures do need to be put in place such as interviewing and taking up references for all your volunteers.
2. There will also only be ONE certificate sent out. This will be sent to the applicant only.
3. There will be a small fee to register for portability and this is a voluntary registration - more information to follow.
