Caring for your child's eyesight
By Gurvinder Tanna Bsc(Hons)
Why regular sight checks are vital
Being able to see clearly is one of the most precious things that you can give your child. It effects every part of their life - both now, and in the future. With regular check-ups at your optician, sight problems can be treated - therefore preventing possible deteriation in your child's performance at school.
So to make sure that your child's sight is at its best, you should arrange for your child to have a full eye examination by a qualified optician at the earliest opportunity. These examinations are FREE on the National Health Service (NHS) up to age 16 (or 19 if attending full-time education). You may also be eligible for NHS vouchers towards to cost of any spectacles.
Keeping watch on your child's eyes
Children don't realize that they have a problem with their eyesight. You need to look out for tell-tale signs and, if spotted, to take them for an eye examination. These are the things to watch out for:
- Frequent rubbing of the eyes
- Discomfort in bright light
- Headaches or eye-strain
- Blurred or double vision
- Watery eyes
- Sitting close to the television
- Clumsiness
- Trouble identifying colours
- Frequent blinking
- Screwing up their eyes
- Holding books very closely when reading
